By Julia Evans FORMER PRIME Minister John Key, rugby player Andy Ellis and author Eleanor Catton could soon be part of an alumni association at their old school. Burnside High School is investigating the possibility of establishing an association for previous students for the first time in its 58-year history. Principal Phil Holstein said the plan is in “its infancy.” “It’s in the planning phase. But at this stage we’re seriously considering ways to keep our former students connected to the school. As well as reconnect them with current students,” he said. But he said there are a few hurdles the school and its board of trustees had to overcome before the plan could progress any further. “It’s something that’s really in the mind of the board. But to start it after 58 years, it’s going to be a challenge,” he said. Challenges come in terms of developing the infrastructure to host the former students first, he said. •Turn to page 7

Aurora Centre repair work delayed By Julia Evans UPGRADE AND repair work on the Aurora Centre will not be finished for a month longer than anticipated. The performing arts centre, on the site of Burnside High School, has been undergoing weather tightness and earthquake damage repairs since the beginning of January. But due to the complexity of the work, the building which was expected to be complete by February, won’t be open until at least March with a final date yet to be confirmed, principal Phil Holstein said. He said while the repair work was going on, Phil Holstein the school was also taking the opportunity to spend time doing “necessary” upgrades to the centre. The school has spent $2 million on the upgrades, which include a new air conditioning system and refreshing the paint job on the building’s exterior, as well as some smaller internal work. “It was definitely time to upgrade . . . I’d heard from a few people the heating and cooling

Mr Holstein said the upgrade work of the Aurora Centre is not only important to the school but the wider community as the building was in key space following the February 22, 2011, earthquake. It was one of the only spaces to host events left in the city. “It’s a significant building for Burnside but also for the city post-quake ,” Mr Holstein said.

Overuse of traffic lights Redwood resident David Mulligan drives along Main North Rd several times a day. He writes about the upgrades and traffic affecting the area MY OPINION is that Main North Rd is diabolical and I think the city council has really lost the plot. I wonder if the person doing the design work gets out of the office and physically goes and looks at the site and thinks about it. They took out the car parks in front of the few shops near Grassmere St and put in two-way cycle

lanes, the car parks were shifted further out into the live traffic lane. The length of all the parks are the exact length of my ute, so if anyone is in the front or rear of the park I want, I have no show of getting in or out. Not to mention that it would hold up the traffic trying. Then they put a set of lights at the end of Grasmere St for traffic and pedestrians, and put another set of pedestrian lights at the end of the bus shelters. One wonders if

people are too lazy, they can’t walk 50m left or right to the pedestrian crossing that is already there. We have lights at Langdons Rd, pedestrian crossing lights at the bus stop outside Northlands Shopping Centre, lights at Grasmere St, lights at Sawyers Arms Rd and lights at Cranford St intersection. There are also lights on Sawyers Arms Rd behind Northlands. Now if there is another earthquake how is anyone going to get out? Recently, I travelled along the north side of Colombo St. It has cycle lanes each side of the road. That to me is utterly ridiculous. I had to travel along Manchester St and what a nightmare. I don’t know if they are putting in cycle lanes but it is hard to see traffic free-flowing in this part of the city. The state of the roads leaves a lot to be desired. The city council does not seem to have the funds to fix the roads properly the first time, if at all. But, by the powers, it certainly has the resources to create cycle lanes and preferential lights for cyclists. One has to wonder with all these lanes that they are putting in, are they really going to all get used? It certainly is not going to encourage me to use buses or cycle into town particularly when there is nothing to go in to town for.

Readers respond to the article in Nor’West News regarding a report revealing the width of Glandovey and Idris Rds being too narrow for trucks to turn without cutting into other lanes Ken Watson – I travel through this intersection on a regular basis and would like to know where the roundabout is, as the traffic lights have been there for several years. You state that trucks would be banned from going through this intersection. Is the council looking at stopping them turning into Glandovey Rd from Idris Rd, or proceeding through the intersection on Idris Rd? I drive buses through here and since the traffic lights have been

installed, I have found this is a very good intersection. Idris Rd is the main direct route from Papanui to Riccarton. With regards to heavy transport not being able to turn the corner without covering two lanes, this applies to 99 per cent of all the intersections in the Christchurch city and suburbs will this be the start of all heavy vehicles being banned in the city area? The rebuild will never be completed. Nathan Gemmill – Roads are almost never wide enough anywhere for large trucks and buses to turn without cutting into other lanes. Should we ban them all everywhere? It’s not like we ever need anything that comes on a truck.

Anne Taylor – Being in the trucking industry this is one of the things drivers have trouble with every day, because 90 per cent of Christchurch’s roads are not wide enough. So they need to use another lane to turn, also there is nowhere to park so drivers have to double park to unload. Now they are getting stung for that as well. Suzey Dovey – We saw three trucks in a row do this turning left into Blenheim Rd from Curletts Rd overbridge we were waiting to turn right from Curletts Rd with Riccarton High behind us onto Blenheim Rd and couldn’t go as trucks took up both lanes turning. Julia March – Totally agree – heavy traffic should not be using Idris Rd. They should be using the new motorway system. Scott Nelson – I drive buses around that south-east corner all the time without cutting into another lane, only issue is now it is a bit tighter turning left into Idris Rd from Glandovey Rd since they’ve shifted and reduced the width of lanes on Idris Rd to accommodate a cycle lane. Truck and trailer units like that one would have no issues making right turns (left turns would require a bit of extra lane space).

Non-separated cycle lanes shouldn’t be installed on multi lane or narrow lane left hand bends like this one, right turning heavy vehicles/wider vehicles are always going use both lanes forcing unsuspecting motorists to swerve into the cycle lane taking out cyclists. Bill Misselbrook – There would be dozens if not hundreds of intersections around the city where large vehicles need extra space to turn . . . what’s so special about this one? Karen Whila – Is there any reason to call people names just because this corner is dangerous at the moment. Maybe this post will help find businesses and the community a solution. Christchurch city and beyond is in the middle of a massive rebuild and all I see lately is whatever the road issue is it is apparently because of the trucks on the road. For example, in some parts of central there is a ban on vehicles over 3500kg, since forever, but at least this is one place trucks can go with being slammed a percentage of the time.

Pink flowering plants targeted By Julia Evans A SPATE of thefts from gardens at a St Albans park has left a community group disappointed. More than half the plants put into Abberley Park by city council staff on December 18 have been stolen in less than a month, Friends of Abberley Park has estimated. “This was a large planting, it’s been a month since they all went in and they’ve been taken . . . it’s hugely disappointing,” group member Patricia Wallace said. She said whoever has taken them is targeting pink flowering plants, which are then carefully removed rather than just ripped from the soil. “We don’t know if its one person or not but there could be a nice, new, pink garden nearby,” she said. The stolen plants include 10 heliotropes that were planted to aide the butterfly recovery project in the park. Several carnations, part of a lavender bush and geraniums have also gone missing. And Mrs Wallace said areas of the scented garden looks a lot thinner than they did previously. The group has been working in conjunction with the city

Papanui rest home finishes $20m upgrade THE $20 million redevelopment of Papanui’s WesleyCare rest home and hospital is complete. As a result of the extensive redevelopment, the Christchurch Methodist Mission-owned facility on Harewood Rd now has 108 rooms with hospital, rest home and palliative level care. WesleyCare manager Fran Pucilowski said the redevelopment process was a challenge for staff but the end result has been worth the wait. “In spite of the difficulties transitioning from the old building to the new, staff maintained the high-level of care and support, “ Ms Pucilowski said. The residents enjoyed seeing the building progress and are relishing being in their new surroundings, she said. The first stage of the redevelopment project was the construction of a two-level, 60 bedroom building, consisting of a kitchen, laundry facilities and a new chapel. Residents were moved across into the new rooms so that the old building could be demolished in 2015. The second stage, which

Pump station takes shape WORK IS well under way on the new Gardiners pump station. The pump station in Harewood Park will replace a shallow well and meet the growing needs of local residents, particularly in the expanding Highstead and Upper Styx areas. The station is expected to be in use by June and features two deep wells – each with a production capacity of 50 litres per second. As well as a 500 cu m prestressed, post-tensioned concrete tank. The pump station is integrated into the overall masterplan for Harewood Park, which will be a key starting point for people

using the Styx source-to-sea walkway. The pump station buildings have been set back within the site to allow the reserve and car parking to be developed. Angled feature walls will help conceal the generators and steel rods on the building’s concrete panels will reflect the “sticks’’ connection to the area. The Styx river was initially named “Sticks’’. A kotuku white heron design – a symbol adopted for the Styx River – will adorn the building, signifying the connection between groundwater and the river.

Wild about wheels FROM OLLIES and kickflips to 900s and grinds, children in Belfast were taught skating tricks by the experts. On Friday the team from Cheapskates Skate Skool took ramps down to Sheldon Park for the afternoon. Children were taught the best ways to ride a board and safety

techniques before being let loose in the skatepark. They were finally treated to a display of some of the school’s pro tricks to help inspire them to keep riding. Next Saturday the school will head to Bishopdale Park on Harewood Rd from noon until 3pm.

Steel frames go up at new schools THE FIRST pieces of vertical steel have been fitted into place for the new campus to house both Avonside Girls and Shirley Boys’ high schools. CPB Contractors project manager John McCullough said 20 per cent of the project located at QE II Park is now complete, and things are on track to open in term two of 2019. Mr McCullough said 50 per cent of the civil works have been completed. Since ground work began in July, 5000 piles have been driven into the ground at the QE II site, and 40 per cent of the foundation work has been completed. “We hope to move on to roofing in February and external cladding will begin soon after,” he said. There are currently about 60 workers on the site which is set to increase to 100 by March. Shirley Boys’ High principal John Laurenson said the campus is going to be an incredible asset for the city’s east. “While the campus will serve our students during school hours, we are really excited to be able to open our doors to the public beyond those hours. It really will be a campus for the community.”

Conor lives the surfing dream By Sophie Cornish CONOR MCLENNAN is living every young surfers dream – hitting the school books in the morning and riding waves in the afternoon. The former Christchurch Boys’ High School student recently won the under-18 national boys title at national surfing championships in Gisborne. Originating from Waimairi Beach, Conor, 17, represented his home club, North Wai Boardriders, in the competition. He moved to Raglan in 2016 to start at the Raglan Surf Academy. The programme is part of Raglan Area School and was set up in 1998. It allows students to complete NCEA while learning about surfing both in and out of the classroom. “We write reports about surfing, the safety of surfing and trying to get out to surf breaks, then every lunchtime we will finish up and go surfing. It’s a great life, I love it,” said Conor. The national final came down to a tight finish, which Conor said made time go by “very, very slowly.” “It was the best feeling ever, I don’t think words can describe how stoked I was to win that, I’ve been working so hard for it for the last year and it all paid off. It’s a really good way for me to start the year,” he said. His parents watched on from

Stir over medium heat for 5-6min or until the sugar is completely dissolved and the wine comes to a simmer.

8 lamb loin chops 1 handful fresh parsley

Combine rind of one lemon, two tbsp lemon juice, crushed garlic, mint (dried), salt, pepper and oil in a small bowl. Place lamb chops (mid-loin) in a shallow dish and pour

Reduce heat to low. Transfer 1/4 cup of the hot wine mixture to a small bowl and sprinkle over the gelatine, stirring to dissolve. Pour the gelatine mixture into the rest of the hot wine and stir well. Remove from heat and set aside for 10min to cool but not set. Divide half the blueberries among four serving glasses. Peel and slice one of the nectarines and divide between the glasses. Carefully pour half the wine over the fruit and refrigerate for 30min. Top with remaining blueberries, nectarine and wine, then cover glasses with plastic cling film and refrigerate until set. Serve with vanilla ice cream.

Shoot-off goes to Brettkelly FORMER Christchurch Boys’ High golfer Dominic Brettkelly won the Canterbury stroke play in a sudden death shoot-off. He, along with Rangiora’s Kazuma Kobori, were tied on 212 after three rounds forcing a shoot-off which Brettkelly won on the second hole at the Waitikiri Golf Club on Sunday. He also won the best under-19 score title. Burnside High’s Juliana Hung won the senior women’s title shooting 75, 69 and 68 for a combined 212 six shots ahead of Jeonghyun Lee. A Canterbury Golf spokeswoman said the full field of 96 players had great conditions over the weekend but also playing a course which was in excellent condition. “The field was strengthened with over 30 entries from outside the region, predominately due to the enhanced initiative formed with Otago and Southland Golf this year,” she said. Brettkelly was also the winner of the inaugural Ron Clement Memorial Trophy which was presented by Ron’s wife Rae and daughter Tracy. “Clements was heavily involved in the development of junior golf and so it is fitting that this year we now have the Ron Clements Memorial Trophy which is awarded for the best under-19 boys score,” she said.

Her highlights included winning the New Zealand amateur stroke play championship and being the only New Zealand amateur to make the half-way cut in the LPGA Tour New Zealand Women’s Open. Those performances helped her secure a golf scholarship to the University of Southern California which she will start after her time with Ko. Ko, who signed to play with PXG clubs last year, said the motivation behind the scholarship is so she can give back to the game by inspiring the next generation of females to strive for the top to see what it takes to get there and help grow the

MICHAEL Jackson fans will be moonwalking their way to theatres next month as the Michael Jackson HIStory Show makes it's return to New Zealand. Aer an approximate 5000+ performances in the past nine years across Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, Hong Kong, Dubai, Indonesia, South Africa, Canada and the US, word of this show has spread amongst the MJ community, with the show being inundated with pleas to come back to the NZ stage. It was this persistent devotion of admirers that allowed producer John Van Grinsven to hear the requests loud and clear, ultimately leading to the Michael Jackson HIStory Show's return. e world-class production showcases all of Michael Jackson's greatest hits live on stage, complemented by the famous dance moves that fans all know, love and aspire to do. Star of the show, Dantanio, will be accompanied by a lively six-piece band, four groovy backup dancers and a phenomenal lighting team. e show features 40 diﬀerent customised costumes, twenty of which are for the MJ character alone. Over 100 hours have been dedicated to the lighting design, which makes use of 160+ moving lights and over 2000 lighting cues arranged to punctuate and enhance the musical elements of the show.
